I have owned and been around horses for more than 25 years, and in that time have Shown, Evented, done a little Dressage, and now I ride purely for fun! I am continually studying horse behaviour and psychology, and like to take a natural and holistic approach to horse care. I thoroughly respect horses as my teachers and love the constant growth that comes from being with them. The minute you think you know them, the next horse comes along with another lesson – such is our journey, never a destination!
I have a caring practical knowledge of horses and a concern in animal welfare, and having been employed by SPCA in the past I also have knowledge of the NZ Animal Welfare Act and the penalties involved in breaching welfare conditions. I maintain close contact with Welfare Inspectors should the need arise.
During the 2020 Covid lockdown I utilised my spare time with further study, completing two equine-based certificates, covering equine management, welfare, behavioural science and psychology. Both I passed with 100% accuracy.
I have also spent time as a Cowboy Challenge judge which I thoroughly enjoyed, as it enabled me to view many breeds of horses in action and consider their way of going, as well as provide positive feedback to riders on their individual horsemanship.
"I have worked with Jill for the past two years. During this time she has been assisting me to manage and supervise 32 horses we have in care. Recently Jill has taken over full management of this supervision. I have always found Jill to be 100% professional and reliable, going above and beyond when the situation demands. Her equine care knowledge is excellent and Jill is very sensible."
